LinkedIn adds new tools to verify members’ work and education history
LinkedIn has introduced new verification features that allow members to confirm the work and education history of other members through their professional connections. The update comes as the platform expands measures to address fake profiles and impersonation, BigGo Finance reported. Under the new system, members can vouch for colleagues and classmates they have worked or studied with. The platform said members must have a verified profile, have been connected to the person for at least one year and have two-factor authentication enabled to provide a verification. Once enough confirmations are received, a verification badge can be added to the member’s profile. The feature is separate from LinkedIn’s existing skill endorsements and is intended to verify whether a member has the professional or educational experience listed on their profile. Oscar Rodriguez , Vice President of Product Management for Trust Products, LinkedIn, said the cost of creating false identities has fallen with advances in artificial intelligence, making verification more important. LinkedIn has also introduced tools for company Page administrators to remove accounts that falsely claim to be associated with their organisation. Administrators can remove such accounts from their company Page and related search results. The company is also testing a setting that would require members claiming current employment at an organisation to complete workplace verification before associating with its Page. Removing a member from a company Page does not change the person’s LinkedIn profile. However, the link to the company Page is removed and the employment experience will no longer appear as verified. The company said the current feature focuses on full-time employees, while contractors and field workers will have other ways to establish their association. LinkedIn is also expanding its partnerships to allow members to use their verified identities outside the platform. Truecaller and PeerSpot are joining existing partners, including Adobe and UserTesting. Through the Truecaller integration, users can see when a caller has a LinkedIn-verified identity. LinkedIn said more than 115 million members have added some form of verification to their profiles, while more than 700,000 companies have been verified. The company also said verified members receive 50% more post engagement and nearly 90% more profile views compared with unverified members.
